Artist Statement
HILARY REA-REMM
I believe it is crucial that my art be purely intuitive with an understanding of the fundamental principles of art. The process of the concept is imperative.
The taxonomy of my work derives from the abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock, followed by Helen Frankenthaller’s approach to handling the paint. Other artists I look to for inspiration are Pat Steir, Adolph Gottlieb, Judith Geichman, Sigmar Polke and Ralph Steadman. Many Japanese ink paintings done by Sesshu Toyo, Jun Kaneko, Gao Xingjian and Hasegawa Tohaku inspire my work as far as material and composition.
I choose to work on a vulnerable surface such as paper, linen, and satin to construct a duality with the direct approach of the ink. The idea behind my work is not only to experiment with the movement of the ink within itself but to use my art as a therapeutic performance, a release of emotion that is coming across directly to the piece with spontaneous improvisation. While working with the medium it is manipulated from thick to thin adding water letting the drips form their own shape while choosing to merge with the first layer. I choose to be direct with application, not with the intention of pristine craftsmanship, rather embracing the uncontainable splatters and drips the ink creates. Creating a piece in one sitting is significant to my art, I feel that is necessary capturing an authentic immediate expression.
